TDF achieves positive outcome for clients charged during Ottawa freedom rally

TDF lawyers get charges stayed for clients who took part in Ottawa freedom rally.

Ottawa: The Democracy Fund (TDF) achieved a successful outcome for clients who were charged with mischief, obstruction of a peace officer and disobeying a court order at the Ottawa freedom rally in January 2022.

The clients were peacefully exercising their rights in Ottawa when they were arrested and charged by police with several criminal offences. One client was charged with mischief and disobeying a court order, and another was charged with mischief, disobeying a court order and obstructing a peace officer. Following the intervention of TDF lawyers and several subsequent court appearances, the charges were stayed on July 29, 2022.

“We are pleased with this outcome. We will continue to defend the rights of our clients to procedural fairness and hold the Crown to its onus,” said TDF lawyer Adam Blake-Gallipeau. “The right to peacefully assemble is enshrined in our Charter, and is fundamental to any democracy,” said Blake-Gallipeau.

The freedom rally in Ottawa began on January 22, 2022, and ended around February 18, 2022, and was organized to protest against the COVID-19 vaccine mandates and public health restrictions.
