The Democracy Fund has launched Canadian Students for Free Speech (CSFS), a national initiative to establish student-led, officially recognized free speech clubs on post-secondary campuses across Canada.
TORONTO: Canadian Students for Free Speech (CSFS) will recruit, train, and support student organizers at universities and colleges across the country. Through CSFS, The Democracy Fund (TDF) will provide participating clubs with legal resources, speaker programming, professional communications materials, and on-the-ground support when university administrations move to restrict or suppress student expression.
To lead this initiative, TDF is posting an immediate hiring notice for a full-time National Campus Coordinator. The Coordinator will serve as the operational spine of the network — recruiting student leaders, coordinating training, organizing speaker tours, supporting club recognition applications, and responding rapidly when student rights are threatened on campus.
WHY CANADIAN STUDENTS FOR FREE SPEECH
Canada's university campuses have become hostile environments for students who hold conservative, traditional, or dissenting views.
Across Canada, students with minority viewpoints self-censor daily, fearing social and academic consequences. No organization currently exists to provide them with systematic support, legal backup, or a national community.
Canadian Students for Free Speech is TDF’s answer to that gap.
WHAT CSFS WILL DO
The initiative will operate on five pillars:
1. Club Recognition: Coaching students through the process of securing official recognition from their institutions — and documenting and publishing every roadblock they encounter.
2. Speaker Programming: Bringing prominent free speech advocates, journalists, and legal experts directly to campus events, debates, and town halls.
3. Documentation: Training club members to record and report every incident of campus censorship, creating a national public record.
4. Legal Support: Deploying TDF’s legal resources when students or clubs face deregistration, disciplinary proceedings, or other institutional suppression.
5. National Community: Creating a network that allows free speech students across Canada to connect, organise, and understand they are not alone.
