TDF lawyers achieve victory for former mayor of West Lincoln

All pandemic-related charges have been dropped against former West Lincoln mayor Dave Bylsma.

TORONTO: The Democracy Fund (TDF) is proud to announce the successful withdrawal of pandemic-related social gathering charges against the former mayor of West Lincoln, Dave Bylsma. This decision follows a generous donation made to a local women’s shelter, the Women’s Place of South Niagara, underscoring the former mayor’s commitment to community support during challenging times.

The charges were initially brought as part of heavy-handed public health measures implemented by the Ontario government during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, TDF Lawyers argued that it was no longer in the public interest to pursue the matter.

After numerous court appearances over 3 years, negotiations with the Crown and upon the former mayor's contributions to the local women’s shelter, the Crown decided to withdraw the charges.

"It's been a long journey over the past 3 1/2 years to clarify the intent of the rally, which was to support small businesses affected by strict and unpredictable mandates," stated the former Mayor.

"TDF has fought, and continues to fight, for those who received gathering and Quarantine Act-related tickets during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2021 and 2022," stated Adam Blake-Gallipeau, senior litigation counsel at TDF. "This outcome reflects our dedication to justice and our belief that everyone deserves representation and a fair hearing."

The donation to the women’s shelter will aid in providing essential services and support to those affected by domestic violence and other crises. "This gesture not only benefits the shelter but also highlights the former mayor’s dedication to improving the lives of others," added Mr. Blake-Gallipeau.
