The Democracy Fund (TDF) is a registered non-profit and civil society organization striving to advance and maintain constitutional rights in Canada, advance education through journalism, and to relieve poverty.
TDF is seeking an organized, entrepreneurial, and mission-driven National Campus Coordinator to help launch and grow Canadian Students for Free Speech, a national network of independent, student-led campus clubs dedicated to defending free expression, open debate, and viewpoint diversity at Canadian universities and colleges.
This position will be responsible for recruiting student leaders, supporting campus club formation, coordinating resources and training, helping students organize events, and serving as the primary point of contact when campus free-speech issues arise. The successful candidate will be passionate about civil liberties and capable of helping young leaders build durable student communities across Canada.
Key Responsibilities:
- Recruit student leaders at universities and colleges across Canada.
- Manage student applications submitted through the program’s online application system.
- Screen prospective student leaders and onboard approved applicants into the national Students for Free Speech network.
- Guide students through the process of forming officially recognized campus clubs.
- Provide students with templates and resources for club constitutions, recognition applications, event planning, recruitment, and campus organizing.
- Support student clubs in building membership, hosting meetings, booking rooms, advertising events, and establishing a durable campus presence.
- Organize training sessions and onboarding calls for student leaders.
- Coordinate the distribution of pamphlets, posters, graphics, messaging, and other campaign materials.
- Help administer modest funding for approved student club activities.
- Assist student clubs with event planning, speaker invitations, promotion, and logistics.
- Track club activity, membership growth, recognition status, campus events, and emerging disputes.
- Maintain an up-to-date directory of recognized Students for Free Speech clubs and student leaders.
- Identify and document campus free-speech disputes, cancellations, room-booking refusals, deregistrations, or improper denials of recognition.
- Serve as the first point of contact when student clubs face censorship, cancellation, deregistration, or administrative obstruction.
- Gather relevant facts, documents, correspondence, and timelines related to campus disputes.
- Coordinate with TDF staff, communications personnel, speakers, partner organizations, and legal partners where appropriate.
- Work with TDF’s communications team to highlight club activities, events, cancellations, and free-speech disputes through the program website and blog.
Requirements:
- A strong commitment to free expression, open debate, viewpoint diversity, civil liberties, and constitutional rights.
- Experience with student organizing, campus clubs, advocacy, non-profit work, political organizing, communications, or related fields.
- Excellent organizational and project-management skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic team environment.
- Sound judgment, professionalism, and discretion when handling sensitive campus disputes.
- Comfort working with students from a range of political, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
- Ability to manage multiple campus relationships, projects, and deadlines at once.
- Familiarity with Canadian universities, student unions, campus club systems, or campus free-speech issues is an asset.
- Experience with NationBuilder or similar CRM, digital organizing, or advocacy management platforms is considered an asset, but is not required.
- Bilingual proficiency in English and French is considered an asset, but is not required.
- A valid driver’s licence is required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Suite, online forms, spreadsheets, and a minimum of an overall intermediate level computer literacy.

Job Type:
Full-time, with occasional evening or weekend work required when supporting student events, training sessions, or campus-related matters.
Location:
This position may be based either in our Toronto office or remotely, depending on the candidate’s location and preference. Some travel may be required.
